Following an increase in tainted pet treats from China leading to animal deaths and illnesses, Sen. Brown is urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take quick action to protect consumers and pet owners. At a news conference in Cleveland, hewas joined by Kevin Thaxton, whose 10 year-old pug, Chancey, passed away unexpectedly after eating chicken jerky pet treats. After Mr. Thaxton’s new five-month old puppy, Penny suffered life-threatening kidney failure after eating the same treats, the Thaxton’s saw an FDA warning connecting the illnesses between the two dogs: tainted chicken jerky pet treats imported from China.

Sen. Brown and U.S. Small Business Administrator Karen Mills visited Constantino’s Market to highlight the success of SBA loans and recent efforts to help small businesses grow. The Cleveland small business has used three loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to expand a successful food market business and create 31 jobs, with the expectation of creating up to 50 more when his new store opens later this year near University Circle.

Sen. Brown, Airbus Americas Chairman Allan McArtor, and Lisa Novelli, President of the National Composite Center (NCC) announce the establishment of a new aerospace research and development consortium. The five-year agreement, announced at NCC, is aimed at strengthening Ohio’s aerospace industry and boosting economic development throughout the state.
With cancer patients being denied lifesaving medications due to drug shortages, Sen. Brown joined a central Ohio breast cancer patient to outline a bill to address drug shortages at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. He also called on the Senate to pass the Preserving Access to Life-Saving Medications Act, legislation he cosponsored which would trigger alert of incidents that would likely result in a drug shortage.
Sen. Brown visited GrafTech International to highlight the VOW to Hire Heroes Act 2011, a new law that he cosponsored that provides tax credits to companies that hire unemployed veterans. A Cleveland-area manufacturer, GrafTech has hired 42 veterans and is looking to hire more veterans for up to 45 open positions at its Lakewood and Parma facilities.
Sen. Brown joined Mahoning Valley law enforcement leaders to outline legislation that would create a national “Blue Alert” system aimed at apprehending criminals who injure or kill law enforcement officers serving in the line of duty. With Ohio bordering five other states, a national Blue Alert system would help track down even those criminals who attempt to flee to other states.
Sen. Brown joined a southwest Ohio electric vehicle company to reveal a new electric jeep model at the North American International Auto Show. Amp Electric Vehicles, based in Loveland, displayed a converted Jeep Grand Cherokee during the auto show in Detroit.
Sen. Brown also welcomed news that Honda plans to build a new central Ohio facility to manufacture the Acura NSX. The NSX will be developed in the US, including the Ohio Center of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. located in Raymond. He met with John Mendel, Executive V.P. of Auto Sales for American Honda Co. at the North American International Auto Show.
