Brown Talks with White House About DHL

Asks Administration for More Direct Involvement

June 25, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC – As part of an ongoing effort to prevent the loss of more than 8,000 jobs in the Wilmington area, Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today spoke with White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten. Deutsche Post, the German-based parent company of DHL, recently announced plans that may result in the loss of thousands of jobs in Ohio.

“Any job loss is devastating to a family,” Brown said. “Job loss at this scale has the potential to cripple entire communities in southwest Ohio. I want to make sure the White House is doing everything it can to help us prevent this from happening.”

Brown asked the White House to appoint a senior administration official to marshal assistance on the issue. He also asked for the White House to help expedite a bipartisan, bicameral request for a Department of Justice anti-trust review. In addition, Brown discussed possible federal use of the Wilmington facility in the event that the DHL-UPS deal goes through.

“Wilmington has been a good home for DHL. Area leaders have worked tirelessly to ensure the company has the full support of the community. Ohio families have helped build the business,” Brown said. “It is unconscionable to think that DHL would respond by betraying our families and our communities. I will continue to work with my colleagues and the White House to make sure southwest Ohio gets the help it needs.”
