October 20, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced $288,345 in funding to provide Akron workers who handle hazardous materials with improved safety training. The federal funds, allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Hazardous Materials Instructor Training (HMIT) grant program, will be distributed to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the National Labor College, the International Association of Machinists, and the International Chemical Workers.
“It is critical that Ohio workers have the resources and training necessary to transport hazardous materials as safely as possible,” Brown said. “These funds will help ensure that the Akron community security and health is protected in any potential situation.”
The funds will be used to provide hazardous materials training for safety instructors and employees who handle these materials in transportation. The International Chemical Workers Union was founded in 1944 and is headquartered in Akron, Ohio.
